WFH Wardrobe Must-Haves for Women: What to wear when working from home

Updated: Apr 21, 2022

Working from home instantly changed my wardrobe. I found myself ditching the work dresses, fancy shoes, and all of my in-office clothes that took up my closet. Next thing I knew, I was repeatedly reaching for the yoga pants, sports bra, and a workout tank... But, I still had to look professional for zoom meetings throughout my week.

I've been doing this work-from-home thing for 3 years now and I've found little hacks and items that help complete my remote work wardrobe. So, if you have video conferences on your schedule each week and you still want to be comfortable, here are some suggestions to make your work-from-home wardrobe work for you.

Some Tips for your WFH Wardrobe:

  • Wear bright colors but don't wear busy designs. This can be super distracting on camera. Solids, polka dots, and simple stripes are great. You want to stand out by not blind everyone in the meeting.

  • Avoid the fitted or super-structured tops. You don't want to wear anything that pulls across your middle or your shoulders. And you definitely don't want anything that creates gaps or anything that's too tight.

  • Sleeves! Short or long... You can easily dress up a nice cotton top with some jewelry and a sweater or jacket. Just don't show up in your latest workout tank.

  • Invest in a couple colorful blazers or cardigans. This way, when you're working in your solid tank tops or t-shirts and a Zoom meeting pops up on your calendar, you can grab the jacket or sweater and a nice necklace or earrings and look like you were ready to own the day from the start!

  • Keep it simple!

Here are some of my favorite options to layer with your favorite tees and tanks.

The POGTMM Women 3/4 Sleeve Blazer Open Front Cardigan Jacket Work Office Blazer is $33 on Amazon (above) and comes in 29 different colors and patterns. The sizes range from 4-6 to 20-22.

Looking for something a little more casual? There are some great cardigans that can help level up your WFH attire just in time for an important meeting.

The Viracy Women's Long Sleeve Casual Button Down Basic Knit Long Cardigan on Amazon is perfect for this. It comes in 9 different colors and sizes range from Medium to XXL and it's only $23-$28.

The Womens Casual Lightweight Long Sleeve Cardigan Soft Drape Open Front Fall Dusters (S-3X) on Amazon is a must-have! It's comfortable and nearly 8,000 people have left 4-5 star reviews about it. It comes in multiple colors and it's $25.

Pants! Yes, I have to say it... PANTS

Here's the thing...You won't find me telling you about jeans or dress pants or anything like that. I'm a yoga pants all-day-every-day kind of girl.

My go-to yoga pants are basically a cheaper version of those really expensive leggings that everyone talks about for a quarter of the price. I wear them everyday and I have them in about 4 or 5 different colors ( I wear a small and I'm 5'5" 135 lbs). I even have a bunch of their tops that have built-in bras in them and I swear by them. They're so comfy and part of my weekly wardrobe. The yoga pants can easily pair with a t-shirt and blazer for days that I have Zoom meetings with the camera on. The yoga pants that I order have the pockets on the side–which I like for my phone–but they also have a pair that do not have pockets.

If you don't want something as fitted as yoga pants, joggers are a great option. The DIBAOLONG Womens Yoga Sweatpants Loose Workout Joggers Pants Comfy Lounge Pants with Pockets are only $24 on Amazon (normally $36) and they come in 25 different colors. I love the waist on these joggers the most. They have an elastic drawstring waist and they're easy to adjust for the perfect fit.

What about accessories?

Accessories can make a world of a difference for your look if you have a Zoom meeting and need to spruce up what you're currently wearing.

Blue light glasses are always a MUST for me. I do have prescription glasses that have blue light blocking in the lenses, but if you don't need a prescription, there are some really cute ones that can give any look some more personality and keep your eyes from feeling strained after a long day in front of the computer screen. This Gaoye 3-Pack Blue Light Blocking Glasses, Fashion Square Fake Nerd Eyewear Anti UV Ray Computer Gaming Eyeglasses Women/Men is only $10.98 (originally $25.99) and you get 3 pairs of glasses in the pack.

If you need prescription glasses, my favorite pick is Quay. They just started selling prescription glasses and they come in some really fun styles (both regular and sunnies). You can try on all of their designs with their virtual try-on! Check it out here. I also have to add, Quay regularly offers BOGO deals on their glasses and it's the reason I have 6 pair of Quay sunglasses now. I LOVE their glasses so much and I can't get enough of them.

A simple necklace can dress up your WFH attire instantly. This $14 MEVECCO Layered Heart Necklace Pendant Handmade 18k Gold Plated Dainty Gold Choker Arrow Bar Layering Long Necklace for Women is great to have handy for those meetings where you want to dress up your solid tops and sweaters.
